Studying Education at Roehampton: then and now

Our history

When you enrol onto one of Roehampton’s postgraduate courses in the School of Education, you become part of a unique 179-year educational heritage. Roehampton has delivered teacher training for longer than any other provider in the UK, and is among the most highly rated. Froebel College, which houses today’s Roehampton School of Education, was founded in 1892 by followers of Friedrich Froebel, a globally acknowledged pioneer of modern educational theory.

Our present

Today at the School of Education we are both informed by our history and sharply focused on the future. We prepare our students for enriching careers within the modern education system.  Whether you’re looking to become a classroom teacher, an early years professional, an academic researcher/policy maker, or a school headteacher, we have a course that will help you reach your career goals.

Early Childhood Studies

This master’s course attracts students from around the world thanks to its support from the Froebel Archive for Childhood Studies. The teaching is informed by active research in early years policy and practice, and is underpinned by Friedrich Froebel’s understanding of children’s play, creativity and the importance of community. The course offers optional modules ranging from a young child’s emotional wellbeing and development, to effective leadership and management in the early years sector.

Education Leadership and Management

This popular master’s programme is designed to boost the career prospects of professionals employed in education. It introduces students to the theory and practice of leadership in learning, developing staff and teams and organisational strategy, which will help them develop in their working lives or prepare them for further study or doctoral research on graduating.

Education

Schooling is just one aspect of education, and this master’s is the chance to explore the subject in its widest context, informed by social and educational theory and practice. It offers the widest choice of optional modules of any of our postgraduate courses, enabling students to tailor their study to their field of interest or career path.

SEND and Inclusive Education

This programme is delivered from a standpoint of social justice, inclusion and human rights for those with learning difficulties or special educational needs. It offers a valuable career boost for classroom teachers or professionals working in SEND roles by exploring the theory, practice and policies behind inclusive education.

PG Cert Music and Children with Special Needs: Sounds of Intent

A unique framework for working with children with profound or multiple learning difficulties through music, created by Professor Adam Ockelford.  Students will study the model, the curriculum framework, the interactive resources and assessment materials of Sounds of Intent.

PG Cert National Award for SEN Coordinators

This course fulfils the statutory requirements of the 2014 Children and Families Act that all new-to-post SENCOs should have a postgraduate qualification.

PGCE Primary, Secondary and School Direct

Roehampton’s biggest intake of postgraduate students is for our PGCE courses, to gain qualified teacher status in the UK and many other countries.  Roehampton offers 13 secondary specialisms, most of which attract a bursary while for primary students with a strength in maths there’s the chance to specialise in mathematics and gain a bursary. This one year course requires students to spend 120 days on school placement and includes 60 master’s level credits toward future postgraduate study, if desired.  Students who wish to train in a particular school may apply for a PGCE School Direct place, a small number of which are available on a salaried basis.

Not sure yet whether teaching is for you?  Take a look at this heartwarming video we made for the last Teacher Appreciation day.

PhD (Prof) Education

The PhD (Prof) Education is a professional doctorate programme in education, designed to provide a structured programme of study for those working, nationally and internationally, in the educational sector.

There are two stages to the programme. Stage One is the taught component (level 7) that acts as a staged preparation for the research component, Stage Two (level 8), which is the student’s research project. Stage Two carries 360 credits and leads to a thesis of 55,000-60,000 words or equivalent for a multi-modal project.

Why I chose Roehampton for my postgraduate

What was it like standing in front of a class for the first time on placement?

Francisca Chigbolu
PGCE Primary

The first time I stood in front of a class independently was during my first placement in a Year 2 class for the PGCE year. Although we’d had been to two schools prior to this it was very different knowing that I would be responsible for a full class’s learning. The first hurdle was for the class to spell and say my name. The most memorable experience I have of this was one pupil who called me “Miss Chigaboo” throughout the entire 8 week placement no matter how often the other children or teachers corrected her. Then later I discovered it spelt ‘Miss Chigbolulol’ on a Christmas card. At the end of my first day during handwriting practice I was told by the same child who called me Miss Chigaboo “Miss, you don’t write cursive very well, you can practise with me”, as she took out a whiteboard and pen for me to practise. From that day on I made a point of practising with the children. The first day of the class set the standard for my placement, I learnt so much from the class teacher and the children and loved every moment – the highs and the lows. What I learnt from them has enormously helped my practice and I will forever remember the innocent butchering of my name and have kept the Christmas card that the pupil gave to me as a reminder of my very first class.

Our Library

Our exceptional, stylish library is only three years old yet has quickly become established as the beating heart of academic life at Roehampton.  Its long, flexible opening hours are ideal for busy postgrads balancing study with work and home life, and there is even a postgraduate-only area.  Take a guided video tour now.

The Froebel Archive: Roehampton’s Unique Asset

The Froebel Archive for Childhood Studies was established in 1977 at Froebel College and is a collection of books, archives, photographs, objects and multi-media materials, centring on Friedrich Froebel’s extraordinary educational legacy. The Archive liaises closely with the School of Education, supporting teaching and learning within and beyond the University.

Since its formation the Archive has grown considerably, both in its collection of material on Friedrich Froebel, in English and in German, and in its holdings relating to the history of Froebel College. The Froebel Archive supports courses at BA and MA level offered within the University which present a comparative view of early childhood philosophies.
